14.2 Software

Software, the topic, in ICT5 isn't really concerned so much with what software can do but more about how organisations go about deciding between alternative software solutions to organisational needs. You need to look at why they evaluate software, the criteria they use and how their findings are reported. All seems like pretty sensible VFM stuff if you ask me.

14.2 Practice questions

AQA past papers
Past papers. Not as useful as the Psionica database AQA shamefully closed but...

Practice questions
Past paper practice questions for 14.2 (.rtf file - opens in Word/Writer) suitable for revision/homework etc. etc.

Past paper answers
Answers to the questions above. Password protected .doc file. Sorry but the password is only available to teachers.

Older Exam Papers
Past papers (pre 2000) not included on the official AQA site from Colchester VI Form College. These still contain some relevant questions for this topic. Look for IT05/ICT5 papers.

14.2 Online Resources

Links to general online resources for 14.2. I'd recommend right clicking links/icons and "Save Target As..." for anything other than web pages (see key below)

Software Evaluation
Very very very good PowerPoint presentation from Kesgrave High School neatly summarises this topic. Very useful for revision.

Software Selection - 7 Step Guide
Outline guide thingy for selecting educational software. Can be related to the "Steps for evaluating software" in Doyle page 274.

14.2 Software Evaluation Questions
Handout containing a set of questions from Gerald Horsley at B & P College. Useful end of unit exercise for revision.

14.2 Software Evaluation
Short PowerPoint presentation based on chapter 54 of the Heathcote A level textbook. This version contains supplementary notes, links and exercises from Mortimer Wilson.

Software Evaluation Timeline
From Kesgrave. I'm not exactly sure what you'd use this for??? It looks very nice anyway so it's probably worth downloading.

Set of online revision notes for this topic (based largely on the Heathcote textbook) from the rather good Antonine Education.

Software Evaluation Task
Nice group work exercise from Whitby Community College can be used to explore many parts of this topic. FatMax recommended.

Software Evaluation
Short online PowerPoint presentation from Colchester VI Form College. There's a pretty good set of notes to accompany the presentation available here

14.2 Software Evaluation
Summary notes and questions for this topic from North Chadderton High School.

MS Office vs. OpenOffice.org
Survey by eWeek compares MSO and OOo from different users' perspectives. Might be a nice idea to look at this and then try the same for other alternative packages e.g. IE vs. Firefox.

MS Office vs OpenOffice.org
Summary of the findings from the above survey

Evaluation Report
Brief set of notes outlining reasons for and contents of a Software Evaluation Report. Contains practice question and answer.

Software
Cool PowerPoint from ICT-Teacher It's a *bit* orange (and you might need sunglasses) but don't let that put you off the very good content.

Revision Questions
Handout containing a couple of older Computing/ICT questions from NEAB. Suitable for homework, revision, blah de blah de blah etc..

Key to resources:

FatMax has no official association with AQA (the lack of an official logo and their refusal to buy me biscuits should be a dead giveaway!). The only vaguely <cough> *reliable* </cough> source of AQA info is www.aqa.org.uk Pics of FatMax by the multi-talented Adam Kirkton.
