Specification Content - ICT5
14.8 Software Development

Pretty short topic this one. Even shorter if you consider that the second bullet point (in the key points below) is *largely* the Software Evaluation already covered in 14.2 by any other name. Practically all of this topic is covered elsewhere in the specification. Mebbee AQA were a bit stretched for topic material when they got to the ICT5 module? Either that or it must have been a long lunch break!

14.8 Key points/learning outcomes
  • Understand that there are different ways of providing software solutions to specialist applications, e.g. user written, internal development team/department, external software house to specification.

  • Describe the possible criteria for selection of software solutions to specialist applications and the place within the corporate strategy.

14.8 Practice questions

AQA past papers
Past papers. Not as useful as the Psionica database AQA shamefully closed but...

Practice questions
Past paper practice questions for 14.8 (.rtf file - opens in Word/Writer) suitable for revision/homework etc. etc.

Past paper answers
Answers to the questions above. This is a password protected .doc file. Sorry but the password is only available to teachers.

Older Exam Papers
Past papers (pre 2000) not included on the official AQA site from Colchester VI Form College. These still contain some relevant questions for this topic. Look for IT05/ICT5 papers.

14.8 Online Resources

Links to general online resources for 14.8. I'd recommend right clicking links/icons and "Save Target As..." for anything other than web pages (see key below)

Software Acquisition and Testing
PowerPoint presentation based on Ch. 62 of the Heathcote book. This version, from Mortimer Wilson, contains extra speaker's notes for each slide.

Software Acquisition
Very short, two-page, summary of this topic from the KJS is pretty useful for last minute revision.

Changing Software
Nice little spider diagram thingy from Kesgrave High summarises some of the problems associated with changing software in organisations.

Software Development
"The future's bright the future's..." Another very good (and very orange!) PowerPoint presentation from the excellent ict-teacher website.

FatMax page of resources includes stuff on  criteria for selection of software. If AQA can skimp on the specification I can skimp on the resources!

Specialist Applications
Set of brief online notes from Colchester VI Form College covering the specialist applications bit of the topic. Not very interesting but then again it's not a very interesting topic!

Open Source Software
Cool looking PowerPoint looks at how you can throw open source into the traditional software acquisition model. There's also a pretty good case study for specific applications here

14.8 Software Development
Summary notes and questions for this topic from North Chadderton High School. Contains a couple of past paper questions with detailed answers.

Software Development and Reliability
Online revision notes from Antonine Education. Based largely on the Heathcote book there are practice questions (and answers) throughout plus an end of unit test.

Unfortunately the only vaguely <snigger> *reliable* </snigger> source of AQA info is www.aqa.org.uk Pics of FatMax looking much cleverer than he really is are by Adam Kirkton - buy something from his site. It might make *you* look clever? This page last updated 13/02/06 by a dodgy dog.
