14.10 Portability of Data

Portability of data is all about how to make it easier to move stuff around! It covers things like the need for standards for interchanging numerical, graphical and textual data between different hardware and software platforms. Apparently it's a pretty big thing in business if your thingamajig wont talk to your whatdyamacallit!

14.10 Practice questions

AQA past papers
Past papers. Not as useful as the Psionica database AQA shamefully closed but...

Practice questions
Past paper practice questions for 14.10 (.rtf file - opens in Word/Writer) suitable for revision/homework etc. etc.

Past paper answers
Answers to the questions above. Password protected .doc file. Sorry but the password is only available to teachers.

Older Exam Papers
Past papers (pre 2000) not included on the official AQA site from Colchester VI Form College. These still contain some relevant questions for this topic. Look for IT05/ICT5 papers.

Advertising Feature

It's not really advertising as I don't actually get paid anything by the author!!! Anyway this book on a CD, from acclaimed author Steve McWeeney, is a "must have" resource for any IT department IMNSHO.

If *you* would like to advertise your tat here contact the fictitious sales department to be put on hold...

14.10 Online Resources

Links to general online resources for 14.10. I'd recommend right clicking links/icons and "Save Target As..." for anything other than web pages (see key below)

Standards and Protocols
A very good set of revision questions from Gerard Horsley at B&P College can be used to either introduce this topic or as an end-of-unit exercise.

Introducing Standards
Short PowerPoint presentation from the ever-lovely Debbie Jones at Teach-ICT gives a neat introduction to need for standards.

Potability of Data
Set of online revision notes for this topic (based largely on the Heathcote textbook) from the rather good Antonine Education. Contains practice questions throughout.

Data Communications & Standards
Based largely on the Heathcote presentation this version from Mortimer Wilson has a few supplementary notes. There's a link to the short film mentioned in the presentation below.

Warriors of the Net
Verrry cool short animated film explains how t'Internet works. It's a BIG FAT download so don't do it at school/college unless you have a nice teacher i.e. not FatMax!

Cool mini website about the OSI 7 layer model. For ICT5 you have to be "aware" of and understand the importance of this model even if you don't have to remember the layers.

Portability of Data
Excellent PowerPoint presentation from Kesgrave from the v. talented Mr. Cawley covers the entire topic. FatMax recommended.

14.10 Portability of Data
Summary notes and questions for 14.10 Portability of Data from North Chadderton High School. Usual quality you'd expect makes this great for revision.

14.10 Portability of Data
Nice set of online resources for this topic from Colchester VI Form College. Includes some older past paper practice questions.

De facto vs. De jure
Neat little summary about the main difference between de jure and de facto standards as they apply to software and computer systems.

Who's behind that website?
The article is actually about phishing but contains a bit about the anatomy of a web address. Anyways it's kind of interesting so have a look if you've got nothing better to do.

Revision Questions
Handout containing a couple of older IT02 questions from NEAB. These are now suitable for ICT5 homework, revision, blah de blah de blah etc..

Disclaimer whatnot: Help FatMax keep these pages relevant by submitting new links and/or reporting dead links here. FatMax has no association with AQA - I suspect they make jokes about me when I'm not listening! The only vaguely <cough> *reliable* </cough> source of AQA info is www.aqa.org.uk All pics of FatMax by the very nice Adam Kirkton - buy something or other off his site so he can retire early.
