4.1.4 Validation & Verification

In this topic you'll need to know how data errors occur. You should be able to explain the purpose of validation (and uses of the common types of validation) and the purpose of verification.

Key Points/Learning Outcomes

By the end of this topic you should:

  • understand how data errors can occur during input, transcription, processing and transmission

  • be able to define and understand the purpose of validation, including the following types:
    • presence,
    • format,
    • range,
    • data type,
    • fixed value,
    • check digit;

You also need to be able to define and understand the purpose of verification, including the following types: double entry, proof reading, sending back printouts.
