  • show an understanding of the Internet and its uses, including: benefits and developments, communications, sharing data and ideas, accessing information

You also need to be able to talk about the benefits, disadvantages and dangers of email (services such as voice mailboxes, address books, group sending, file attachments); FTP (definition and purpose); newsgroups; chatrooms; on-line shopping; on-line databases accessing information; search engines (selection and appropriate use).

Below you can find some resources to help you with your planning, revision or idle curiosity. Note: none of these are endorsed by WJEC

Resources

doc icon Introduction to Network Concepts
Based on Steve Longley's Moodle notes this covers basic concepts such as LAN vs WAN and networks vs. stand-alone systems.
web icon What is a Network?
Definitions of LAN and WAN. Also, looks at the benefits/drawbacks of networks in a school (this has been on a past exam!)
flash icon Network Concepts
Flash notes by Steve Longley. Covers the same stuff as the doc file above but looks nicer!
web icon Organising LANs and WANs
Nice little mini site from Teach-ICT covering the different methods of connecting WANs. Don't know where the LANs come into it?!?
ppt icon Role of Communication Systems
Very good PowerPoint from the nice people at OCRICT. Not all relevant but there's some very good stuff in there.
pdf icon Internet Trends 2008
Big FAT 7.5MB download!!! Very pretty 90+ pages on current Internet trends. Highly recommended for teachers & students alike.
doc icon Networks
Very short set of notes from the WJEC INSET CD. Might provide a useful introduction to key areas of this topic.
pdf icon Intranet vs. Extranet
Bit of a large download but this doc neatly describes the key points you'll need to know for this topic.

doc icon Peer to Peer vs. Client-Server
Bit dated - it talks about Windows 98! Not really sure this is relevant here. Have a look if you've nothing better to do.
web icon Uses of the Internet
Visual representation of who uses the Internet and what they use it for. Might be a nice introduction to this topic.
web icon Future Web Trends
Most of these developments are happening now so a useful article for the "Internet developments" bit of the spec.

At the central office of a large landscape gardening company there are 10 employees. Each employee has their own standalone computer system and printer. The Chief Executive realises that it would be beneficial to network these computers.

Discuss the benefits that the company would gain from networking the computers.
