10.3 Control of Information

Control of information is about the issues involved with holding personal data and the access levels that can be used to limit, or protect, the availability of data. This is pretty important if you don't want some disgruntled employee at McVities mail order revealing to all and sundry *exactly* how much you've spent on biscuits in the last six months!!!

10.3 Key points/learning outcomes
  • Describe the legal rights and obligations on holders of personal data to permit access.

  • Understand that the sale of entitlement to access to data may mean paying for a more convenient form of access, the right of which already exists.

  • Understand that files on individuals and on organisations that are non-disclosable have commercial value.

Interesting article from Warwick University about r & r. This article went missing but big pat on the head and 3 bonios to Kurt Hitchen for finding it again!!!

The DoubleClick Dilemma
Interesting article from The Guardian newspaper. As customer data increases in value how do organisations protect the privacy of the individual?

Control of Information
Page of links for this topic from Alcester Grammar School It's a v. v. useful source for finding out more about how this topic applies to real-life (TM). The data access/data security link is especially worth looking at.

Nicely organised set of notes, PowerPoints and past paper questions from Colchester VI Form College. It's well worth exploring the rest of this site.
