10.7 Information and the Professional

Information and the Professional looks at the responsibilities and qualities required of a professional working in the IT industry. Apparently the ability to eat lots of biscuits, drink gallons of coffee and tell lies to clueless newbies are *not* the kind of qualities employers look for when hiring IT professionals.

10.7 Key points/learning outcomes
  • Recall the personal qualities and general characteristics necessary for a person working effectively within the ICT industry and as part of an ICT team

FatMax note: It's easy to get a *bit* carried away with his topic. Don't get too bogged down with the ethics/codes of conduct stuff as this is actually assessed in ICT4. Usual ICT1 questions are along the lines of "Explain 4 desirable characteristics of blah de blah de blah"

10.7 Practice questions

AQA past papers
Past papers. Not as useful as the Psionica database AQA shamefully closed but...

Practice Questions
These notes from North Chadderton contain practice questions and skeleton answers

Answers to the questions above. Password protected .doc file. Sorry but the password is only available to teachers.

Older Exam Papers
Past papers (pre 2000) not included on the official AQA site from Colchester VI Form College. These still contain some relevant questions for this topic.

10.7 Online Resources

Links to general online resources for 10.7. I recommend right clicking links/icons and "Save Target As..." for anything other than web pages (see key below)

Flash Notes
Steve Longley's excellent online flash notes for this topic. Offline version "borrowed" from the *old* psionica site.  Right click link and Save Target As...

BCS Code of Conduct
British Computer Society is the industry body for IT professionals in the UK. If you rummage around their site a bit you can find loads of stuff for this topic.

Information and the Professional
Very (and I mean VERY!) short PowerPoint presentation based on part of Heathcote Ch.1. It's probably useful as an introduction to this topic but that's about it.

IT & the Professional
VERY short PowerPoint presentation from Kesgrave High School. Very useful tho' in a mind-mappy sort of way.

ETHICOMP Journal
CCSR's e-journal. It's mainly concerned with ethics but you get the odd good article about IT and the professional in general. You have to subscribe but it's free!

Case Study
Extract from the Royal Mail IS/IT Department Professionalism Policy.

Survey of Professional Practice
Is IT ethical? Survey of IT professionals puts this question into context.

FLOSS
Free/Libre Open-Source Software. Some people are more ethical than others! This doesn't really have anything to do with IT & the Professional. Just thought I'd stick it in here.

Computing Careers
Online job agency type thingy. This is a pretty good resource for teechas planning for research type lessons on this topic i.e. kind of skills needed for different jobs etc.

Information and the Professional
Summary revision notes and questions from North Chadderton High. Contains a set of revision notes and a couple of practice questions with answers.

The Professional

Revision summary sheet type thingy for this topic from www.ict-teacher.com Very useful stuff for planning your revision. Nice work Maths person!

Information & the professional
Another *very* pink PowerPoint presentation from www.ict-teacher.com. I'm not sure why it has a pic of two revolting looking people halfway through but there you go!
